Description
The Ohaus PA313 Pioneer analytical balance has a capacity of 310g and an accuracy of 0.001g (also called readability), with a high-contrast, backlit LCD screen for viewing results in dim lighting. The external, digital calibration system requires a 200g mass (sold separately), and an indicator on the front panel provides quick confirmation that the balance is level prior to use. Three selectable settings adjust the sensitivity of the balance to compensate for excessive vibration, airflow, and other environmental disturbances. The integral below-balance hook suspends samples beneath the balance for measuring specific gravity and density.
The balance weighs in 16 different international units and one custom unit, and includes an auto tare function that zeroes out the balance over the entire weighing range in one second. It delivers precise weighing results, and performs parts counting and percent weighing tasks. The rear-facing RS232 port is positioned for easy connection to a printer or computer, and built-in functions enable work in compliance with GLP (Good Laboratory Practices) traceability requirements. A built-in menu lock feature helps prevent unauthorized changes to balance settings, and the integrated security slot for locks and cables protects the balance from unauthorized use or theft. The ABS plastic and die-cast metal housing protects the internal weighing cell from environmental influences and impact. The stainless steel weighing pan resists corrosion from spills of most sample materials, and a replaceable in-use cover protects the display and keypad against damage from spills. The draft shield, designed with all-glass panels, including three sliding doors, can be disassembled without tools or moving the balance, and all components, including the balance housing can be quickly wiped clean. The balance is manufactured to ISO 9001:2000 standards, and when used according to manufacturer’s recommendations, is covered by a two-year warranty against defects in workmanship or materials.

Balances are measuring instruments used to determine the mass of an object, while scales are used to measure the weight of an object. The measurement results from balances are generally considered to be more precise compared to results from scales. Mechanical balances are the simplest type of balance, and use a lever and slide to indicate the measurement. Conventional balances are commonly used in offices, the jewelry industry, and in kitchens, and display results digitally, but are less precise than analytical balances. Analytical balances measure to a high degree of precision and accuracy (0.0001g or better), and display results digitally. These balances have a cover with doors to prevent dust and airflow from affecting the measurement. Moisture balances analyze moisture content in a material sample, using infrared or halogen heat sources to dry the sample and then calculate the moisture content from the before- and after-drying weight, and display results digitally, on the balance, or transfer the information for display on a computer.
Ohaus manufactures scales and balances for laboratory, educational, retail, food, and jewelry applications. The company, which was founded in 1914, is headquartered in Parsippany, NJ.
